ODWIRA FESTIVAL:

The Odwira Festival which starts at Jukwa, the traditional capital and ends at Dunkwa-on Offin, the administrative capital, runs for weeks and is celebrated by the people of Denkyira. It signifies the commemoration of their ancestors and lesser gods.

The festival is announced by drumming and gun firing at the palace. It is characterized by sniveling by women amidst the gun firing by the Asafo groups. This is to acknowledge the departed.

The inhabitants are joined by the two traditional warriors (Asafo groups) on Friday to take the streets of Jukwa amidst drumming and merry making.
Thereafter the Chief is carried in a palanquin to a sacred place where sacrifices are made to departed royals of Denkyira state.

The festival in Jukwa ends with a durbar of chiefs and people of the area. The festival is moved to Dunkwa-on Offin, the administrative capital, after the week in Jukwa for the peak.

HOMOWO FESTIVAL

The HOMOWO (Hooting at Hunger) festival is celebrated during the periods of August and September in the Ga ( Accra) traditional area. “Kpokpi” the festival dish is sprinkled to god s and ancestors for spiritual protection. It characterized by a procession of twins, traditional drumming and dancing and general merry making, through the principal streets of Accra.

There is usually a ban on noise making a month before the celebration begins. The peak of the festival is form 12 noon to 6.00pm where any woman, not regarding the status accepts a hug from a man on the festival street.
