Gestures & Protocol
Ghanaians are friendly spontaneous people always ready
to laugh, deeply self conscious and who adore tradition.
Various ethnic groups exist all with their customs and
gestures so it is not possible to suggest an "all
round-recipe for success with Ghanaians. When greeting,
a normal handshake will suffice followed by a click
of the fingers with the person you are greeting. A little
strange at first but one gets used it to very quickly.
Ghanaians say "Akwaaba" meaning welcome, when
greeting, the left hand is considered as a sign of disrespect,
and should not be used for greeting, giving gifts and
eating. When food and drink is refused it is tantamount
to an insult.
With regard to dress codes there are no stringent rules
but it is wise to avoid going into a restaurant in a
bikini or without a shirt. When dealing with authority,
sloppy dress is frowned upon. When taking snaps or videoing
of an individual it is better to ask the person's permission
before taking the photograph.
